Two pints of lager and a packet of crisps

My disappointment on discovering that the ‘Norfolk Gem’ beer I bought on Monday contains New Zealand hops was briefly replaced by my excitement upon finding out about a beer which claims to be virtually zero carbon. Adnams has a lot of information on their website about how this has been worked out, some of it is due to offsetting but mostly it’s due to locally-grown ingredients and an energy-efficient brewing process.

Sadly, my excitement was shortlived, as I dashed off an email to Adnams asking where I could purchase this marvelous product, only to be told that it is no longer being made! So close, and yet so far.

I had more luck with Kettle Chips: over 95% of their potatoes are grown in East Anglia. A small percentage come from Cornwall during July, when they can’t get early potatoes more locally. We’ve decided not to split hairs and we’re pretty relieved that there is at least one crisp we can snack on for the next six weeks. (No, I’m not going to ask where the salt and sunflower oil comes from. You have to celebrate small victories.)

On the home front, we are really enjoying some home-grown plum ketchup that my sister

made last year. It has been largely neglected until now, but has come into it’s own. We had it with our breaded plaice goujons on Sunday, and then used it in a stir-fry sauce on Tuesday with a bit of honey, wild Garlic Mustard leaves and ginger (from our exceptions list); delicious! Thanks Amy 🙂
