With the start of the new Living Well with Less Stuff challenge, I have decided to focus on services and activities rather than just “stuff” this time round. To start with, I’m going to keep a diary of all my activities for a while, to see where the money (and carbon) goes – if I look at my diary for a few weeks ahead, I see that I’ve got tickets for the Baka Beyond concert at the Junction and for a couple of things coming up at the Arts Theatre, so I will try to check out the carbon cost of these. I’ve just googled and found this interesting post about creating a low-carbon play at the Young Vic.
One thing I do which must be fairly low-carbon is belong to community choir Women of Note, and this doesn’t just mean singing, although the singing is great fun. Somehow over the years we have developed a really strong group and go away together a couple of weekends a year, sharing rooms to keep the costs down – we also meet in each others’ houses for shared meals and Rummikub evenings (that’s a board game for the uninitiated, and the evenings are much more riotous than they sound). We perform in community halls and churches (fantastic accoustics!) and rarely use microphones. (If you think it sounds fun, we’re supporting singer-songwriter Charlie Dore next week: 7.45pm Thursday October 10th at St Luke’s Church, Victoria Road – she’s really good and we are doing a set of our favourite songs. Let me know if you want to join!)
