Stop press: eating vegan easier than we thought!

Spicy veg casserole

Well, 11 of us managed to complete the February Eat Vegan! week and in the main we thoroughly enjoyed it. Not everyone came to the excellent bring-and-share meal that Helen wrote about last time, but here are a few comments from the emails flying around among those who took part in the challenge:

“…the good news is that I’m still a vegan …. and enjoying it!” (Miriam, 2 weeks later)

“I didn’t expect this, but I actually feel more energetic eating vegan food – the day after the challenge finished I ate some meat and was really looking forward to it (!) but it made me feel a bit sick and lacking in energy. I’ll have to experiment some more and see if it happens again. Watch this space!” Bev

Enjoying cooking more

“I would say that I’m making much more of an effort finding interesting things to eat and am much more aware of what ingredients I use, I’d say that I was enjoying cooking more than usual. And no cravings so far.” Jane

I am succeeding with the challenge and thoroughly enjoying it …  have definitely eaten less cakes in cafes (can’t be a bad thing). I have also been a guest at a dinner party and managed to tell them that I was vegan …(one of my fears of becoming 100% vegan is feeling like I’m causing hassle for others).”

“I have gone back to eating eggs, fish and drinking small amounts of milk, but in much smaller quantities than before I tried the challenge.” (Heather)

Herbal teas or soya milk?

“The only thing I would say to watch out for (apart from the hidden ingredients, which was a bit of an eye opener) is that we both woke up with headaches on the 2nd day and realised that it was probably dehydration – we’d not been drinking tea, so our liquids were down. We upped our intake yesterday and were fine this morning. Can’t say I really take to herbally teas but soya milk in normal tea is actually quite nice.” Jane

Hidden ingredients in processed food!

“As for the challenge, I didn’t think I’d struggle toooo much this week but after reading this ‘hidden-ingredients‘ list via the CCF site I probably consume more non-vegan things than I thought. It’s good to know so I can try to complete the challenge without any – or too many – naughties sneaking in. I’ll also find the site useful for learning even more about what exactly is in the food we buy!” Lindsey

“The good news is that Arjuna (Mill Rd) sells vegan wines and beers but they are more expensive.”

So it’s easier than we think! Let’s see how we get on the second time round….
