In Season Now: Sweetcorn

Emma 5Frozen sweetcorn was one of the first things we decided to stop buying after discovering it came all the way from Hungary.  We were worried how we’d survive without our freezer staple but little did we know that sweetcorn season was just around the corner.

Our first local sweetcorn turned up in our veg box a few weeks ago now but was quickly gobbled up by my boyfriend whilst I was out.  In fact three more arrived and disappeared in the same way so it was a while before I got one!  It had been such a long time since I’ve eaten ‘corn on the cob’ that I’d forgotten how great it is.  I cooked it in boiling water for 6 minutes, paired it with some cheese on toast made with local bread from Cobs Bakery and cheese from Lymn Bank Farm and had a perfect local lunch!  I’m definitely not missing the frozen variety now.

Sweetcorn is in season in August and September so there’s still time to pick some up.  Whilst researching seasonal food I’ve also discovered this great poster from Eat Seasonably, which shows what is in season when and is now proudly displayed on my fridge.
