Transformed and Efficient Victorian Terrace, Cambridge City

Sat 15 Nov 2025, – Sat 22 Nov 2025, Various

Meet your hosts, Marta and Felix

We are a couple of professionals: a computer scientist and an architect. So, we are both interested in new technologies and building improvements, it’s fair to say. Given the speed at which climate change is taking place, and the urgency by which we need to act, we felt spurred into making eco renovations on our own Victorian home.

Felix says that “after undertaking our own home retrofit we are now convinced any home can be transformed, it’s not rocket science, and the technologies are well tested.”

We have learn a lot about the challenges of retrofitting a historic home in a conservation area, and whilst we still have more work we want to undertake in the future the improvements we have made has made better use of our internal living space (no radiators cluttering the walls), is more comfortable and consistently warm, and significantly more energy efficient meaning that we do not pay more for electricity annually than we did in our combined electric and gas bills.

Key features of this home

  • Underfloor insulation using 75mm PIR insulation laid on plywood
  • 30mm PIR jupiter Ideal EPS panel underfloor heating
  • Breathable wall insulation using 25mm (downstairs) and 50mm (first floor) Thermablok aerogel boards
  • Breathable primer, lime plaster and paint
  • double -glazed sash windows and a French door to the rear of the house
  • Triple glazed large Velfac windows in the kitchen

Our hosts top tips

  • It’s more cost-efficient to do the work all at the same time but equally phasing it well will get you there too!
  • Doing research pays off, asking people who had similar work done in a similar property (age, type). Go to an eco-building materials expo show, get in touch with local organisations or builders. Expand your local network.
  • Use recommended and experienced installers.
