We are a young couple who work locally on the science park. Joe studied atmospheric physics at university which really opened his eyes to the threat of climate change. Hence the importance of reducing his personal carbon footprint by electrifying the house and cutting the gas supply. Nat shares a passion for living sustainably.
Joe started pursuing options as soon as he moved into the house, so as to maximise the financial benefits over his time living here. I had the loft converted into a storage space, and got the insulation upgraded from 200mm to 300mm in the same process. The solar PV and battery system provides enough energy for the whole house, including hot water heating on the heat pump, from April to September. Only from October to March do we need to import some electricity from the grid.
Joe enjoyed the whole renovation process: “It’s been a fun adventure. Now that it’s complete, it feels so nice to be living in a sustainable home that is cheap to run. I find myself doing a bit more cooking, now that it’s so cheap (or free in summer) to have the oven/hob running.”
