Heat Pump Simplicity, Shelford Road, Trumpington

Meet your host, Michael

We moved to a mid-terrace house in Trumpington in 2019, having lived for several years in a South Cambs village. We decided to replace the ageing combi-boiler with a cost-effective, low carbon air-source heat pump (ASHP). It was a very simple process, and we found that even our 1920s home met the requirements. Going down a sustainable route was important for us but whatever your views on the environment a heat pump makes sense as an affordable and effective way to heat your home.

Michael says ‘the new systems controls, and thermostat mean the heating system is easier to use and the house is warmer.’

Along with the project came some challenges, for example finding somewhere for a new hot water cylinder as the old airing cupboard was inaccessible.  Overall, the benefits far outweighed the challenges, and the air-source heat pump has performed as anticipated. We are pleased with how things are going, and confident about future reliability and cost.

Key features of this home

  • 8.5kW Mitsubishi Air Source Heat Pump
  • 200L Mono Packaged Water Cylinder Mitsubishi
  • 4 panel PV system
  • FoxESS small system battery

Our host’s top tips

  • The best time to switch to an ASHP is when your boiler needs replacing.
  • Don’t be put off by a fear that this is complex – it isn’t.
  • A national firm using a one-size fits all approach may not be right for you, especially if your house is older; a local firm with flexible solutions may work better.
