Landfills are filling up. The process of making new products creates emissions. If we can repair what we already have we don’t need to buy new. That’s where repair cafés come in – skilled volunteers repair items that would otherwise be thrown away, for free; extending their life, reducing waste and saving money. Repair cafés are also a wonderful way to bring local communities together.
Repairs can be as simple as replacing a blown fuse in a lamp, sharpening a pair of secateurs or servicing a bicycle. We can also straighten wobbly wooden chairs, sew up damaged clothing, fit replacement batteries in electronics and fix all sorts of other things.
This is Buckden Parish Council’s 7th event as part of a network of repair cafes across the county supported by Cambridge Carbon Footprint. So far we’ve prevented an estimated 6,038 kg of CO2e emissions – that’s like growing 101 tree seedlings for 10 years!
If you would like to join us as a volunteer repairer, our as part of our welcome team or café crew, please contact us (RepairCafe@BuckdenPC.org.uk). The event is made possible through café sales and donations, so if you’d like to support us by baking a cake, please get in touch!
Bookings open on January 8th. To pre-book, please complete the booking form at bit.ly/BuckdenRepairCafe, or contact us at RepairCafe@buckdenpc.org.uk. Paper forms will also be available in Buckden Library or from the Village Hall. You can just turn up on the day but may have to wait. There’ll be tea, cakes/savouries to purchase at the café. If you’ve nothing to be mended, please do join us for a cuppa. Donations can be made by cash or card.
Thank you to everyone who came to our last event in June. Once again our repairers managed to fix 4 out of every 5 items on the day, and only 2 out of the 51 seen had to be consigned to the bin. The generous donations received are really helping us to keep this popular event going – thank you everyone!
