I know this is supposed to be about how I am managing, trying to eat almost entirely local, seasonal food, but I have to recommend an absolutely fascinating programme I watched on BBC2 last night: The Men Who Made Us Fat. This was looking at how fast-food restaurants, followed later by supermarkets, started supersizing and how that relates directly to the obesity epidemic. It had a great mixture of historical footage and interviews, including with researchers who showed that the common explanation given by the food industry – “It’s because people don’t take enough exercise” – simply isn’t true. They also explained how we get sucked in to overeating. I found it a real eye-opener and will certainly watch the previous episode on iplayer and try to catch next week’s programme. By the way, you absolutely can’t eat this kind of thing if you are following the Eating Local project – the only way is to cook from scratch. Interestingly, you can still eat too much, though, if you are that way inclined, and I’m afraid this has always been a problem of mine….
