I did a big vegetable shop at the Sunday Farmer’s Market – I hope the veg will last me all week. It had better, as my share of it came to around £7, which is one third of my weekly allowance! Simon’s veg is really lovely and fresh and I stocked up with potatoes, carrots (the very dirty and misshapen ones, as they are much cheaper and taste just as good!), curly kale, winter cabbage, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, onions, shallots (twice the price of onions, but delicious whole in stews), celeriac, purple sprouting broccoli, leeks. Actually, it may last me longer than a week – I still have swede, cabbage and parsnips left over from last week. I’ve never checked things so carefully before!
Simon had heard the radio broadcast I did last week about the blog on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire and seemed pleased about it – apparently several of his customers had heard it.
Beautiful eggs and home-made jam
Brian was on his own at the egg stall. I bought a dozen eggs (£3.20), a couple of pots of jam (£1.20 each) made with Angie’s home-grown raspberries and blackcurrants. We also refilled three of our bottles with rape-seed oil (£3 per bottle – it comes from Chatteris and is truly delicious, whether used for cooking or in salads). I guess that we may get through a bottle a week between the two of us, but we shall see! Also bought a free-range chicken – not cheap (£14 for a large one), but worth it, as it tastes so much better. I will aim to eat less of it at a sitting so it goes further! ( We do make stock out of the bones.)
