A little bit on cost

spicy pigeon stir-fry

Someone recently suggested it would be useful to have more details about the cost of the food we eat while taking part in Eating Local. I completely agree with this – and the meal on the right (spicy pigeon stir-fry with red russian kale, new carrots and cauliflower) cost roughly £2.75 for the one portion (£1.75 going on the pigeon-breasts) – but it’s hard for me to work out prices at the moment, as Dave, my husband, is doing all the shopping (and cooking!) while I am incapacitated and I don’t want to give him even more work to do working everything out! I’ll make certain I do it when we do our second round of Eating Well on a Budget in September – hopefully I’ll be properly mobile before then! You can see my costs from the previous Eating Well on a Budget here.

I can, however, tell you how much my local breakfast costs, as I worked it out previously and I always have the same:  locally-grown porridge (made with water and then local honey added – this is quite expensive at £4.50 per pot, so I only had a small amount). This costs me £5.60 for seven days (and would probably have been cheaper if I didn’t need to buy gluten-free). I also have a tea made with garden lemon balm or mint and a tiny bit of the honey.

I must admit that this local food costs quite a bit more than £21 per week per adult at the moment, even though I can’t tell you exactly how much. I am making the most of the local strawberries and raspberries and a big punnet of local strawberries costs £2.50 – when I was eating home stored apples, they cost 12p each, but I can easily eat £1-worth of strawberries at a sitting, as I love them and I am greedy. So, while I can live on healthy local food for £21 per week, I usually prefer not to….. (But Simon’s vegetables from the Sunday Farmer’s Market are really good value and often not more expensive than supermarkets.)
