Fortune favours the bold

So after my last entry about the hardships of eating local, I thought I’d share some of the benefits that I’ve got out of this. Last Sunday I went to the local market and saw this really odd-shaped thing, green with tentacles sticking out of it like some weird Dr Who creature. Turning to the person next to me, I plucked up the courage to ask what it was. Okay she was quite pretty, but I’m sure I could quite easily have asked the slightly odd middle aged man behind me who had caterpillars instead of eyebrows. Anyway I digress. I found out that the veg in question had some weird and wonderful name I’d never heard before – Kohlrabi. You just need to slice them, heat them up a bit, either microwave or steam and then just eat them. Nothing could be simpler.

Eat me if you dare puny human!

So I tried it tonight, and it was GREAT!!! Really really tasty. But I’m sure I’ve never heard of them before. Here’s a picture of one, doesn’t it look like a stage prop from some Star Trek episode. But it is really nice to eat, a tangy smooth texture.

So I’ve learnt not to be scared about trying new foods. As Captain Sisko said in an episode of Star Trek, when he was about to launch a suicide attack to save the Galaxy,

“There’s an old saying: ‘fortune favours the bold’. I guess we’re about to find out”.

So be brave, be bold, go out there and try something new – even if it does look and sound like something a Klingon would eat.
