Will the environmental vote swing it?

This year is a special opportunity to shove our politicians one step further towards the low carbon world we need.  We have both the UK elections, and the UNFCC negotiations in Paris in December, and Cambridge Carbon Footprint is playing its part.

It’s very unclear to the pollsters what effect votes for the smaller parties will have on the Cambridge election, so it could go either way.

Interestingly, as recently reported in the Sunday Times, Cambridge is one of the UK’s top 10 cities for eco living, which is perhaps why all four of the leading parliamentary candidates have significant personal environmental credentials.  (Notably UKIP declined our invitation!) The environmental vote really could swing it in Cambridge, so the hustings is an opportunity to put your questions to  Cambridge’s leading candidates and see how you want to vote.

Even if you aren’t registered to vote in the Cambridge constituency, it’s also an opportunity to show that you care about climate change.  Once the national parties realise that it is an electorally significant issue they’ll make pro-environmental measures feature more strongly in their manifestos and coalition agreements.

This event is just one of a series of events, national and local, that are being planned for 2015.  On Wednesday June 17th, a group of us from Cambridge will be joining the Climate Coalition’s mass lobby of MPs in Westminster, to show our new MP, whoever it is, that we care about climate change.  This aims to be the UK’s largest lobby ever, and should be fun, so do put the date in your diary.   In November and December, we will also be joining various demonstrations and campaigns in London and Paris, around the critical UN climate talks in Paris. We’ll have more details in due course, but do join us. (Let Nicole know, if you’d like to be kept informed).
