Meet your host, Dave

I bought next door in 2000. In 2011 my elderly mother moved in. I bought this adjacent house in 2013, so that I had my own space while still caring for her.

I’m retired now due to ill health. With limited mobility, my home is more important to me than ever. I was once advised to sell up and move to purpose-built accessible accommodation. But that was out of the question, because it would have taken me away from my allotment and the community around me. So the emphasis was on adaptation, and as I’ve long tried to live with a small environmental footprint, I wanted a home which facilitates that.

Having made a number of relatively small improvements over 20 years, when substantial funds became available I chose to throw almost everything at the project. Creating a larger, more comfortable and accessible living space adjacent to my allotment has already improved my quality of life. I want to leave a tangible low-carbon legacy in a home with good energy performance which will be especially useful to future residents with accessibility needs.
