1960s DIY-led Retrofit: Our All-Electric Home - Cambridge

1960s DIY-led Retrofit: Our All-Electric Home – Cambridge

Sun 2 Oct 2022, – Sat 8 Oct 2022, Various

Meet your hosts, Rob and Anne

Rob and Anne bought their 1960’s home in 2000 and have worked gradually over the years to reduce the carbon footprint of their home, increasing its insulation, adding in renewables, controlled ventilation and smart electric technologies. They’ve taken a really hands-on approach to their renovations, undertaking a lot of DIY, and their hard work has paid off. As of December 2021, they’ve managed to switch off the gas to their home completely.

Rob says:

“Our aim was to lower the family’s carbon footprint.  I started measuring the gas and electricity we used, and decided to take control rather than ignore it.  I identified each significant component of energy use, and researched how to reduce it.

Most of the insulation and airtightness work has been DIY, which I’ve enjoyed doing – it’s practical work, making a nice contrast to my day job.”
