In Season Now: Kale

Emma 6One of the great things about having a veg box delivered each week is that it introduces us to new foods.  One of those new foods is kale.  I must admit, when it first turned up I wasn’t really sure what it was let alone what to do with it! Fortunately Google came to the rescue and I soon found hundreds of recipes to choose from.

Our favourite recipes so far have been Stir-fried curly kale with chilli & garlic and baked crispy kale which I think tastes just like the seaweed you get from the Chinese.  Definitely not the healthiest way to eat it but certainly delicious!  To make your own you’ll need the following (to serve 4):

  • 200g shredded kale or you could also use cabbage
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds
  • 2 tbsp Demerara sugar
  • salt

Mix everything (but the sugar) together in a bowl, spread out onto a baking tray and then sprinkle over half the sugar.  Bake for 7 mins at 170C / gas 5. then remove from the oven and give it a toss.  Sprinkle over the remaining sugar and bake for a further 7 minutes until crispy.  Mix well again before serving.

Kale is in season from September right through till April
