The day is being run jointly by Transition Cambridge and Cambridge Carbon Footprint.

Booking is essential and places are limited to 20 maximum. To book, email info@cambridgecarbonfootprint.org

Please bring a packed lunch or food to share, and come dressed to spend part of the day outdoors.

Eco-Renovation in Progress!

16 January 2012
7:30 pmto9:30 pm

Exciting opportunity to go round a Victorian mid-terrace house with Anne Cooper of award-winning AC Architects Cambridge Ltd, who specialise in sustainable architecture. Anne will do an initial appraisal of the house and offer recommendations for making it more energy-efficient, taking into account the need to conserve original features.

While Anne will look at the larger picture, Martin Roach, who has a great deal of experience in DIY energy efficiency, will look at the smaller jobs that can be done straightaway. We will also have the use of a thermal imaging camera, which will instantly show the main areas of heat loss. The house is in Hills Road, near the rail station,

The session will last two hours. After an introduction by Anne, the group will split into two, with Anne and Martin each taking a party round the house. The groups will then change over, giving everyone a chance to look at the house from both points of view. The owners will be on hand to answer questions and discuss what has been done already.

Booking is essential for this, as the house cannot accommodate more than 20 people!  Email info@cambridgecarbonfootprint.org to book

MRF trip

MRF in Peterborough is an essential element in the city council’s integrated strategy to raise recycling rates to over 65 per cent by 2020 and to use non-recycled waste as fuel in an energy-from-waste plant.

Here we are having just seen what happens to the contents of our blue bin. I don’t think any of us will throw our rubbish away with quite such abandon again!  A salutory experience, and a fascinating visit.

Straw Bale House visit

Back in October a number of us visited Rachel and Andrew’s straw bale house near Newmarket.  What made the tour especially interesting was the fact that they’ve done much of the building work themselves, and as experts, were able to explain things in detail.  We hope they’ll invite us back when it’s finished!  Well worth visiting their blog here

Just Do It: a tale of modern day outlaws

14 December 2011
7:30 pmto9:30 pm

Emily James has made an inspiring documentary about climate change activists which is informative, exciting and moving.  It focuses on several (mainly young) people over a period of months including 2009 Climate Camp and various high profile direct actions, which you will undoubtedly have seen on the news at the time. The activists are intelligent and articulate and it is fascinating to hear them talk about their motives. The ongoing occupation outside St Paul’s makes this all the more timely.

The film (90 minutes) will be followed by a discussion about the pros and cons of direct action and other means of effecting change.

You can watch the trailer here: http://justdoitfilm.com/

Venue: the upstairs room at the Wesley Methodist Church, CB1 1LG Cambridge (there is a lift)

Arrive from 7pm for a 7.30pm start                                                    Download Poster

All welcome! Entry is free but we’re hoping you’ll make a small donation towards room and film hire.

Underfloor Insulation

30 November 2011
7:00 pmto9:00 pm

Un-insulated suspended wood floors are common in pre-1900 houses in Cambridge. They often result in ground-floor rooms that are cold, draughty and expensive to heat. They can be insulated, but there are a variety of technical and practical challenges  that need to be addressed.

This event will be hosted by a family that has just undertaken this work for themselves and will include a brief presentation on risks and how to avoid them, a look at the finished product and the opportunity to examine it for yourself with a thermal imaging camera.

Where:  St Barnabas Rd, Cambridge

Numbers limited to 12 so booking essential:  Tel: 01223 659962 or email info@cambridgecarbonfootprint.org

Trip to BedZed

On 8th Nov 2011, eleven of us from CCF and SPEP had an inspiring trip to BedZed

Completed in 2002, it’s designed to use only energy from renewable sources generated on site.
It’s UK’s largest mixed-use sustainable community: 50% housing for sale, 25% shared ownership and 25% social housing for rent.

The coloured cowls provide passive ventilation – and are very recognisable. Other features include:

  • very high levels of insulation
  • passive solar heating, along with PV
  • Water collection and re-use
  • good information for residents. eg: electricity consumption
  • car club and public transport Continue reading
