Advanced Recycling Workshop

1 March 2012
7:30 pmto9:30 pm

So you recycle paper, aluminium and glass – now what? Mark Buckton, Recycling Champions Coordinator with the City Council, will give advice and insights for experienced recyclers wanting to know more about the world of recycling, such as:

  • How to sort and recycle electronics, clothing or household items,
  • What happens to your recyclables once they are in the bin?
  • How to choose items based on their potential for recycling,
  • What are the carbon implications of deriving power from waste or shipping recycling to be processed?

Bring your questions and take a meander through the world of rubbish with Mark – you’d be surprised at what you can learn about the seemingly simple act of recycling! The workshop is limited to 25 people so booking is essential – email info@cambridgecarbonfootprint.org to save your place. The workshop will take place at St. Luke’s Church on Victoria Road (CB4 3DZ).

Recycle your Read at the CCF Book Swap

10 March 2012
1:00 pmto4:00 pm

If you love books and the planet, you’ll love a good book swap! Just bring one or more previously loved books to swap. Leave your book on the appropriately labelled table (eg. science fiction, biography, etc), then feel free to browse, chat and find some new books to take home with you. You’ll have a chance to tell others why you enjoyed your books and get some recommendations too. We will have post-it notes and pens available so participants can leave comments in the books they are swapping. There is no limit to the number of books you can swap but we recommend taking away a similar number of books as you brought.

Location: Bharat Bhavan on Mill Road, Cambridge (at the foot of the railway bridge, big brick building with a red door).

Admission: £2/person if you bring books to swap, £5/person without books, Kids Free; this helps us cover the cost of the venue, and helps our charity to raise a few funds.

Any books left at the end of the day will be donated to Books for Amnesty in Cambridge.

If you want to play a part in making this event happen, check out volunteer information here.

Story of Stuff and Discussion

14 March 2012
7:30 pmto9:00 pm

CCF is screening The Story of Stuff on Wednesday March 14th at 7.30pm at the Friends Meeting House. The Story of Stuff is one of the most watched environmental-themed online film of all time. It is a 20-minute, fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns. The Story of Stuff exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues, and calls us together to create a more sustainable and just world.

Even if you have seen the film before, it’s worth another viewing, and we will be following it up with a discussion on ways of embracing lives that are less focused on consumption. (HICCA (Histon and Impington Climate Change Action Group) recently showed the film at their film club, and a number of them have been inspired to support each other to reduce consumption (“non-retail therapy”!). CCF will be aiming to do the same, while adding the topic of consumption to our current collection of CCF blogs (local food and non-dairy). Whether you are just looking for consumption-reduction ideas or if you are looking to start an exciting challenge with the support of like-minded individuals, this is where it begins!
