Volunteers and Events Organiser (3 days a week)

Cambridge Carbon Footprint currently has a team of 2 part-time paid staff and at least 30 volunteers working with us on different projects at any one time (over 100 volunteers in any one year).

Job purpose:

to organise and deliver (with volunteer help) :

• public engagement activities – stalls at public events, talks and workshops for interested organisations
• our calendar of low-carbon events
• contributions to other CCF Projects, as needed

CCF’s work relies heavily on teams of volunteers to deliver projects. A major part of this role involves recruiting, organising and supporting these volunteers.

Some administrative support is available from the co-ordinator and the office intern.

You will report to: Bev Sedley, Trustee

Based at: our office off Milton Rd, Cambridge.

Salary: £19,500 pro rata (60%).

Contract length: One year, renewable subject to availability of funding

Responsibilities

1. Recruiting, inducting, organising and supporting volunteers.

2. Public engagement activities: planning and organising our stalls, talks and workshops, liaising with client organisations, organising training for volunteers and co-ordinating volunteers to deliver the events, monitoring and evaluating the activities.

3. Low-Carbon Network and other calendar events: Identifying possibilities and working with others to develop new events; planning and organising these events, organising publicity, recruiting volunteers to deliver them, monitoring and evaluating the events.

You will be assisted and supported by the trustees in developing our work, ensuring that they meet CCF’s overall objectives and strategy.

You will work closely with the CCF Co-ordinator and the office intern. This will include shared responsibility for the practicalities of dealing with enquiries, booking rooms, maintaining records, sending out publicity and enrolling participants for events.

The job involves some evening and weekend work, typically averaging one session per week for which TOIL is given.

Public engagement activities

CCF’s programme of footprint stalls, workshops and presentations, aims to engage, enthuse and inspire members of the public to act on the problem of climate change. Activities need to provide a positive frame, acknowledge the psychological issues that affect lifestyle and behaviour change and focus on carbon reduction. These activities are delivered by volunteers. The role of the project worker is to organise these activities and ensure that our pool of volunteers are trained to deliver them effectively.

Low-carbon network and calendar events

CCF runs a varied programme of events on climate change and carbon reduction. The main target audience is people who have completed Carbon Conversation groups and the network events aim to provide continuing support for people who are adopting new behaviours and lifestyle changes, placing these in a positive, active framework. A subsidiary audience is other members of the public who may be interested in climate change. Other calendar events include volunteer training in communication and psychological skills, induction meetings for new volunteers and additional public meetings on topics of interest which may be initiated by a Trustee, a staff member or a volunteer.

Events are mainly organised and delivered by volunteers. The role of the volunteers and events organiser is to take overall responsibility for these events, planning the programme, and recruit and train new volunteers as necessary.
