Volunteer with us

If you are passionate about climate issues and ready to put in some time and energy to help people reduce their carbon footprints, then we have a place for you at CCF.

We have a constant need for volunteers in Outreach, Events, Carbon Conversations, Climate Friendly Homes and Thermal Imaging, and Fundraising, all of which are described in detail below. Many of our volunteers help in more than one of these roles and training is provided for each.

Other volunteer roles, such as Office Intern, Newsletter Coordinator, or Open Eco-Homes Organiser, arise from time to time and are advertised below and in our newsletter.

We would also like to hear from you if you have special skills or experience such as design and layout, media work, fundraising, IT, etc, and also if you have specialist knowledge in the field of climate change, carbon reduction or communicating about climate change.

If you have questions, ideas or to apply for any of our volunteer opportunities please contact our Volunteers and Events Organiser, Stephanie (stephanie@cambridgecarbonfootprint.org) with details of your interests, experience and availability and we will set up a meeting with you.

Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities

Outreach

Outreach is a set of tools we use to communicate to the public and other organisations about our activities and on how to reduce their carbon footprints. Mainly these are in the form of stalls, presentations and workshops.

Outreach Stalls

We are frequently invited to host stalls at local events and festivals. Each one is an opportunity to talk to members of the public about CCF, carbon footprints and climate change. Stalls are more fun and successful if they are interactive, exciting and tailored to an event as closely as possible, which means always striving to innovate our approach. More details are here.

Presentations and Workshops:

We are regularly invited or ask schools and community groups to run a workshop or give a presentation on various climate change and carbon-related topics, such as our popular ‘Carbon Conversations Taster’. They are often specialised to suit a particular group’s needs and interests. More details are here.

Events

We have many events every month here at CCF, which need volunteers in preparation for events and at events themselves. If you want to help organise or publicise an event, be a speaker or share your skills via a workshop, or if you just want to help behind the scenes as an event takes place, we need you. Read all the details here.

Also, if you would like to volunteer to put up posters in your area every time we have an event, that would be very helpful.

Carbon Conversations Facilitators

Carbon Conversations is 6 inspiring, practical meetings on low-carbon living. It was recently featured in the Guardian as one of the 20 best climate change solutions.

Led by trained volunteer facilitators, groups of 6-8 members meet in homes, community centres, workplaces or other venues. The six 2-hour meetings engage people both emotionally and practically, helping them overcome the barriers often associated with making large carbon reductions. Most members make reductions of 1 tonne CO2 during the meetings and develop plans to halve their footprints over a longer period.

We provide free training for facilitators, and for Cambridge facilitators there are regular extra-trainings which are a great chance to top-up your facilitation skills, meet other facilitators and boost your confidence!

Climate Friendly Homes and Thermal Imaging

The Climate Friendly Homes Project provides a free service to householders to help them make practical plans to reduce your carbon emissions.

Volunteer surveyor training prepares volunteers so that they are able to offer:

  • A free individualised report offering suggestions and advice about what can be done to cut the carbon footprint of your home, and save on bills.
  • Free loan of an electricity monitor, and help installing it – because seeing how much energy you use helps you cut down
  • Information tailored to your circumstances on grants, suppliers and discount
  • Advice and support.

We also train volunteers to use our thermal imaging camera. This detects infrared   radiation and produces images like this one, enabling users to see the key areas where heat is being lost.

Once volunteers have been trained they are able to make bookings to borrow the camera.

Fundraising (grants and events)

CCF relies on donations and grants to fund its activities so fundraising is one of the most important volunteer positions we have! From organising events to writing bids for grants, we need your help we could use your help. We’re open to ideas, and in the past we’ve organised a variety of fundraisers: from film showings to ceilidhs, and the office can help and support you in organising events. More details are here.
