Visit to the Green Backyard (Peterborough)

12 June 2010

An opportunity to visit a truly inspiring project in a city less well-heeled than Cambridge.

Italian born eco-artist Rennie Antonelli is transforming 3 acres of derelict land in inner-city Peterborough into a green and productive oasis with fruit and vegetable beds , an orchard and a pond is planned. A shelter on the site is not only self sufficient in water and solar panel and wood burning stove for cooking lunch: it is built entirely from reclaimed materials, as are the sculptures dotted about.

A wide range of people work on the site including some with mental health difficulties, children excluded from school and some who are disabled. Through their relation ship with him and by connecting with the Earth Rennie enables many to reclaim their lives.

Meet Angela and Urma in the ticket office of Cambridge railway station at 9.45 to catch the 10.00 train for Peterborough. (You’ll recognise them because they’ll have a Cambridge Carbon Footprint sign).

Return fare to Peterborough £13.70 with reductions for Senior Rail Card etc. No cost for the trip, but donations to go direct to the Green Backyard project welcome.

Bring a picnic lunch.  Return train arrives around 3 pm.
